Love Songs

With Paris being the Love Capital of the World, we HAD to add this category. French people can be very romantic. I hope you will be able to fall in love with one of those amazing French songs.

Jacques Brel - Ne Me Quitte Pas

Jacques Brel - Don't Leave Me

A French classic (1972). Brel begs for his love to stay. He would give and do anything for the love of his life. Brel was a good singer and his interpretation are very dramatic.

Ne me quitte pas
Il faut oublier
Tout peut s’oublier
Qui s’enfuit déjà
Oublier le temps
Des malentendus
Et le temps perdu
A savoir comment
Oublier ces heures
Qui tuaient parfois
A coups de pourquoi
Le cœur du bonheur
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Moi je t’offrirai
Des perles de pluie
Venues de pays
Où il ne pleut pas
Je creuserai la terre
Jusqu’après ma mort
Pour couvrir ton corps
D’or et de lumière
Je ferai un domaine
Où l’amour sera roi
Où l’amour sera loi
Où tu seras reine
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Ne me quitte pas
Je t’inventerai
Des mots insensés
Que tu comprendras
Je te parlerai
De ces amants-là
Qui ont vu deux fois
Leurs cœurs s’embraser
Je te raconterai
L’histoire de ce roi
Mort de n’avoir pas
Pu te rencontrer
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

On a vu souvent
Rejaillir le feu
D’un ancien volcan
Qu’on croyait trop vieux
Il est paraît-il
Des terres brûlées
Donnant plus de blé
Qu’un meilleur avril
Et quand vient le soir
Pour qu’un ciel flamboie
Le rouge et le noir
Ne s’épousent-ils pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Ne me quitte pas
Je ne vais plus pleurer
Je ne vais plus parler
Je me cacherai là
A te regarder
Danser et sourire
Et à t’écouter
Chanter et puis rire
Laisse-moi devenir
L’ombre de ton ombre
L’ombre de ta main
L’ombre de ton chien
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas.

Don’t leave me
We must just forget
Everything can be forgotten
That dissipates already
Let’s forget the time
The misunderstandings
And the wasted time
To find out how
To forget these hours
Which sometimes kill
From blows of why,
A heart full of joy.
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me

I would offer you
Pearls of rain
Coming from the lands
Where it never rains
I will cross the world
Till after my death
To cover your body
With gold and light
I will make a kingdom
where love will be king
Where love will be the law
Where you will be queen
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me

Don’t leave me,
I would invent just for you
Insane words
That you’ll understand
And I will tell you
Of these lovers who
Who saw their heart
blaze twice
I will tell you
The story of this king
Dead, from having not
Encountered you.
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me

One often recalls
Flames light anew
From an old volcano
Thought to be too old.
It appears that
The scorched fields
Can give more corn
Than the best of april.
And when evening comes
In this blazing sky
The red and the night
Marry nevermore.
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me

Do not leave me now
I will cry no more
I will talk no more
I will hide there
Just to look at you
Dance and smile
And to hear you
Sing and then laugh
Let me be for you
The shadow of your shadow
The shadow of your hand
The shadow of your dog
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me
Don’t leave me

Johnny Hallyday - Je te promets

Johnny Hallyday - I promise you

A song of a man convincing a woman that he loves her and always will. However, aware of his limitations he can only promise a life with him but cannot give her the life of her dream.

J’ai tant besoin d’y croire encore

I promise you the salt of my mouth’s kiss
I promise you the honey of the touch of my hand
I promise you the sky above your bed
Flowers and lace so that your nights are sweet

I promise you the key of my soul’s secrets
I promise you my life, from my laughter to my tears
I promise you fire instead of guns
No more “farewell”, only “see you”

I believe in it as I believe in the earth like I believe in the sun
I believe in it like a child, as you can believe in heaven
I believe in it as I believe in your skin, in your tight arms around me
I promise you a story that is different from the others
I need so much to believe in it again

I promise you all-blue days like your veins
I promise you red nights like your dreams
White-hot hours and sleepless minutes
Carefree seconds to the rythm of your hips

I promise you my arms to carry your fears
I promise you my hands for you to kiss
I promise you my eyes if you can no longer see
I promise you to be happy if you have no longer hope

I believe in it as I believe in the earth like I believe in the sun
I believe in it like a child, as you can believe in heaven
I believe in it as I believe in your skin, in your tight arms around me
I promise you a story that is different from the others
If you help me to believe in it again

And even if it’s not true, if you’ve already been tricked
If words are hackneyed, like chalk-written
After all striking stones can make big fires
Maybe with time, if we believe in it
We can just try and see

And even if it’s not true, even if I lie
If words are hackneyed, light as the wind
And even if your story ends off in the morning
I promise you a feverish and sweet time
Not all night long but for a few hours

I promise you the salt of my mouth’s kiss
I promise you the honey of the touch of my hand
I promise you the sky above your bed
Flowers and lace so that your nights are sweet

Christophe - Les mots bleus

Christophe - The blue words

This song is a bit “fleur-bleu” (cheesy romantic). The singers sings about the difficulty for a lover to express his emotions of pure love.

Parler me semble ridicule

It’s six o’ clock in the church bell tower
In the square the flowers compose poetry
A girl is going to go out to from the town hall
As every evening I wait for her,
She smiles at me, I have to talk to her
At all costs

I will tell her blue words
The words that we say with our eyes
Talking seems ridiculous to me
I jump forward and then step back

In front of a useless sentence
Which would break the fragile moment
Of an encounter
Of an encounter

I will tell her blue words
The ones that make people happy
I will call her without naming her
Maybe I’m outdated

The winter wind blows in April
I like the immobile silence
Of an encounter
Of an encounter

There’s no longer a clock, no longer a bell tower
In the square the trees are asleep
I return by train at night
On the platform I see her smile at me
She will have to understand
At all costs

I will tell her blue words
The words that we say with our eyes
All the excuses that we give
Are like stolen kisses

A subtle bitterness remains
That would spoil the fragile moment
Of our reunions
Of our reunions

I will tell her blue words
The ones that make people happy
A love story without words
No longer needs the protocol

And all the pointless speeches
Would somewhat tarnish the design
Of our reunions
Of our reunions

I will tell her blue words
The words we say with our eyes
I will tell her all the blue words
All those that make people happy

All the blue words
All the blue words

Charles Aznavour - La bohème

Charles Aznavour - Bohemia

The nostalgia of a painter and for the old days where he lived a Bohemian lifestyle. Even though, he had to live day by day with little to no food. He misses those happy times.

Devant mon chevalet
De passer des nuits blanches
Retouchant le dessin
De la ligne d’un sein
Du galbe d’une hanche et ce n’est qu’au matin
Qu’on s’asseyait enfin
Devant un café-crème
Épuisés mais ravis
Fallait-il que l’on s’aime et qu’on aime la vie.

La bohème, la bohème,
Ça voulait dire on a 20 ans

On était jeunes, on était fous.

I am telling you about a time
That people under twenty years old would not know.
Montmartre at the time was hanging its lilacs
Up under our windows, and even if our modest furnished (room)
That we used as a nest did not look great,
This is where we met,
Me starving and you posing nude.

La boheme, la boheme
It meant we are happy.
La boheme, la boheme
We only ate every other day.

In the coffee shops nearby
We were a few
Waiting for glory, and although poor
With our empty bellies
We would not stop believing, and when some bistro
For a nice warm meal
Would take a painting, we recited verses,
Gathered around the stove while forgetting the winter.

La boheme, la boheme
It meant you are pretty.
La boheme, la boheme
And we were all talented.

Often I would,
In front of my easel,
Spend sleepless nights
Altering the drawing,
Of the line of a breast,
Of the curve of a hip, and only in the morning,
We would finally sit,
In front of a coffee with milk,
Exhausted but delighted.
We must have loved each other and loved life.

La boheme, la boheme
It meant we are twenty years old.
La boheme, la boheme
We lived from the air of the time

When on a random day
I go for a walk
To my old address
I no longer recognize
Neither the walls, nor the streets
That witnessed my youth.
At the top of a stairway,
I look for the studio
Of which nothing remains.
In its new setting,
Montmartre seems sad and the lilacs are dead.

La boheme, la boheme.
We were young, we were foolish.
La boheme, la boheme.
It doesn’t mean anything anymore.
