Rapide/Vite
A lot of people make mistakes with the adverb “vite” and the adjective “rapide”. In this lesson, you are going to learn the difference between the two and learn some new words to add to your vocabulary.
Rapide
“Rapide” is an adjective. We will put it after a noun or after the verb: être.
- Une voiture rapide. A fast car.
- Cet avion est rapide. This plane is fast.
Vite
“Vite” is an adverb. Therefore, we put it after all verbs, except être.
- Tu cours vite! You run fast.
- Je mange vite. I eat fast.

La vitesse = the speed (what speed something moves)
La rapidité = quickeness (how quick something happens)
Rapidement = quickly (adverb) used just liked “vite”
Accélérer = to accelerate

Lent(e) (Slow)
“Lent(e)” is an adjective. We will put it after a noun or after the verb: être.
- Une voiture lente. A slow car.
- Ce train est lent. This train is slow.
Lentement (Slowly)
“Lentement” is an adverb. Therefore, we put it after all verbs, except être.
- Tu cours lentement! You run slowly.
- Elle lit lentement. She reads slowly.
